The Meadow That Forgot to Watch

Long ago, there was a peaceful meadow where all the white rabbits lived safely together. Every day, they took turns watching for foxes from the hilltop. When one rabbit spotted danger, they would thump their foot to warn everyone, and all the rabbits would run to safety.
The white rabbits had done this for many, many years, and because of their careful watching, no rabbit had been caught by a fox in anyone’s memory.
One spring, a group of black rabbits arrived from the distant hills. These black rabbits had never learned to watch for foxes together. Each rabbit simply looked out for themselves.
“We should welcome them,” said the white rabbits kindly. “Perhaps they could learn to take turns watching, since this is how we stay safe here.”
But the black rabbits didn’t want to change. “We’ve always survived just fine on our own,” they said. “Why should we risk our safety standing on the hilltop when we could be eating or resting?”
Soon, some young white rabbits began to think the black rabbits had a good point. “Why should I have to risk my safety watching for foxes?” they wondered. “I could be taking care of myself instead, like the black rabbits do.”
One by one, the white rabbits stopped taking their turns on the hilltop. The daily watch became smaller and smaller, until some days no rabbit was watching at all.
Then the foxes discovered what had happened.
One by one, rabbits started disappearing from the meadow. The foxes had learned they could hunt freely with no one watching from the hilltop.
When the old white rabbits tried to warn everyone about the danger, the black rabbits just shrugged sadly. “Sometimes rabbits get taken by foxes,” they said. “That’s just how life is. We are prey animals.”
But the old white rabbits remembered the many, many years when no rabbit had been taken, because someone was always watching and warning the others.
“It doesn’t have to be this way!” the old rabbits cried. But fewer and fewer rabbits were left to listen.
The Black Rabbits’ Dream

In the rocky hills far away, the black rabbits lived a hard and dangerous life. Every day, some rabbit would disappear when the fox came hunting. No one worked together to watch for danger - each rabbit simply tried to hide and hope the fox would catch someone else instead.
“This is just how life is,” the black rabbits would say sadly when another friend vanished. “We are prey animals. Sometimes the fox gets lucky.”
But one day, a traveling crow brought wonderful news. “In the meadow beyond the forest,” said the crow, “there live white rabbits who are never caught by foxes. They have some magic way of staying safe.”
The black rabbits were amazed. “No rabbit has been taken there in years!” the crow continued. “They live without fear.”
The black rabbits decided they must see this miraculous place for themselves. After a long journey, they arrived at the beautiful meadow and saw the white rabbits living peacefully, with plenty of food and no signs of fox attacks.
“How do you stay so safe?” asked the black rabbits in wonder.
“We take turns watching for foxes from the hilltop,” explained the white rabbits. “When someone spots danger, they warn everyone.”
The black rabbits thought this sounded like a fine idea for the white rabbits to continue doing. But they had their own way of living.
“We’ve survived just fine on our own,” the black rabbits said when the white rabbits invited them to join the watch. “Why should we risk our safety standing on that hilltop when we could be eating or resting instead?”
And what wonderful lives they lived! The black rabbits enjoyed all the safety of the meadow while the white rabbits did the dangerous work of watching. They grew fat and happy while never having to worry about foxes.
Soon, some young white rabbits began to notice how smart the black rabbits were. “Look how clever they are,” the young white rabbits whispered. “They get all the safety without any of the risk. Why should we have to stand guard when we could be enjoying ourselves too?”
One by one, the white rabbits stopped taking their turns on the hilltop. “The black rabbits are right,” they said. “We should look out for ourselves first.”
The black rabbits felt very proud. They had found the perfect life - all the benefits of the white rabbits’ safety, but none of the work.
Until the day the foxes returned.
The Fox’s Plan

Far in the rocky hills, the clever fox had been hunting black rabbits for many years. Life was easy - the black rabbits never worked together, so he could catch one whenever he was hungry.
But the fox had heard stories about a distant meadow where white rabbits lived. These rabbits had some system that made them impossible to catch. For years, the fox had avoided that place, knowing he would go hungry there.
Then one day, the fox had a very clever idea.
“Friend crow,” called the fox to the traveling bird. “I have a business proposition for you.”
The crow landed nearby, curious but cautious.
“You know those black rabbits in the hills?” said the fox with a sly smile. “They live such dangerous lives. And you know about that safe meadow where the white rabbits never get caught, don’t you?”
The crow nodded.
“What if,” said the fox slowly, “you were to tell the black rabbits about that wonderful, safe meadow? Think how grateful they would be to learn about such a place.”
“That seems kind,” said the crow. “But why do you care about helping rabbits?”
The fox chuckled. “Oh, I’m just tired of the same old hunting grounds. If the black rabbits moved away, I’d have to find new places to hunt. It would be quite inconvenient for me.”
The crow thought this sounded reasonable. After all, the black rabbits would be much safer in the meadow, and the fox would have to work harder to find food. Everyone would benefit!
So the crow flew to the black rabbits and told them the wonderful news about the safe meadow beyond the forest.
Months later, the crow returned to check on his friend the fox, expecting to find him thin and struggling without his easy prey.
Instead, he found the fox fatter and happier than ever before.
“But I thought you’d be hungry without the black rabbits to hunt!” said the confused crow.
The fox smiled his widest smile. “Oh, my dear crow, I’ve never eaten so well in my life. You see, when the black rabbits went to that meadow, they brought their ways with them. Soon, none of the rabbits were watching for foxes anymore.”
The crow’s eyes grew wide with horror.
“Now I can hunt all the rabbits I want,” the fox continued cheerfully. “Both black and white! Thank you for your help, friend crow. You made it all possible.”
